I've been told that you can create PDFs free from Microsoft Word and I can't see how to do this.

Hi Anon,
Sure, this is an easy one -- first up, for what I'm going to suggest, you need to be using Microsoft Word 2007.
Download the Microsoft Save As PDF or XPS add-in from here.
After installation you will find that a menuitem under the Home, Save-As menu called "PDF or XPS"
Presto! Select the location and away you go...
Note: if you're not using Microsoft Word 2007 then you can look to use one of the free drivers Rowan suggested in 4x PDF Help and also in the 4x PDF Blog.
